ECWR Condemns the Excessive Use of Violence & Demands an Independent Investigation

(Cairo, December 18, 2011) ECWR expresses its grave concern regarding the events that took place in front of the Cabinet on Friday, December 16th, 2011 which resulted in 10 martyrs and more than 400 injured, according to the Ministry of Health.
ECWR condemns the extreme use of violence by the Egyptian military forces towards the protesters, especially female participants. ECWR calls for official fact finding investigation of the events conducted by the independent judiciary in cooperation with representatives of civil society. The results of the investigation should be published and appropriate and timely measures should be taken in order to deliver justice.
ECWR upholds the right to freedom of expression and the peaceful demonstration, and demands the need to:

  • Allow for the freedom of expression and assembly through peaceful demonstration as well as calling the Military to fulfill its role in maintaining the security of Egypt while at the same time respecting the demonstrations’ rights.
  • The urgent investigation with all parties involved in the events.
  • Develop a roadmap and specific procedures for safe transition in democracy by insuring participation of all political players, without predominance to any of powers and protection and respect of the human rights.
