The Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights is monitoring the parliamentary runoff elections from a gender perspective

In continuing its efforts to enhance women’s role in the political sphere and in following the mechanisms and means that guarantee equality in women’s representation, ECWR is monitoring women’s role in the runoff elections of December 5th 2010. Twenty‐nine female candidates are competing for seats in this runoff election: 18 NDP female candidates, 1 female candidate of Al Wafd Party, 1 female candidate of Al Tagammu’ party and 9 independents. The runoff election is being held in the following 9 governorates:

  • Al Qualiubia governorate. One female candidate is competing in the seventh constituency in Toukh.
  • Ismailia. After the withdrawal of Al Wafd party, two NDP female candidates are competing with 1 female independent for the quota seat and the labor seat.
  • Aswan. Four female candidates: 3 NDP female candidates and 1 independent female candidate for quota constituencies.
  • Sohag (in the 1st & 2nd constituencies) between 4 women; two from NDP, and two independent on labor seat in quota polling stations.
  • Qena. Four independent female candidates and 2 NDP female candidates competing for professional and labor seats.
  • Red Sea governorate. Four female candidates, two from NDP and two independents, competing for professional and labor seats in quota polling stations.
  • New Valley governorate. One NDP female candidate and one independent female candidate compete for a seat.
  • Luxor governorates. Four female candidates, two from NDP and two independent, compete for professional and labor seats in quota polling stations.

ECWR will resume monitoring the runoff Parliamentary Elections of 2010 from a
qualitative perspective.
