“Towards the Unknown: The Risks of Chaos”

ECWR conducted a study entitled "“Towards the Unknown: The Risks of Chaos”. The study addresses the impact of electoral violence on Egypt’s democratic transition and women’s political participation. The field sample of the study was 2509 people from six governorates: Cairo, Giza, Qalubaya, Alexandria, Minya, and Isma'alya. This study is the first to address electoral violence and its impact on Egyptian society,

democratic transition, and the weak political representation of Egyptian women in the Parliament. It analyzes the impact of electoral violence on political participation, and more specifically focuses on women, and how this inhibits Egypt’s democratic transition process. It also monitors the role civil society plays in supporting and raising awareness about the importance of political participation, and emphasizes the importance of a fair and free election process as a basic indicator for political reform in Egypt. read more >>>

The second section discusses the jurisdiction of family courts in personal status cases for guardian of self and guardian of money. In addition, this section focuses on the Writ of Summons and judicial fees relief that includes imprisonment cases and reasons that made the judge exempts those previous cases from the necessity for lawyer's signature on its writs.

The third topic discusses the jurisdiction of the chief judge of the family court to issue death certificates and inheritance in addition to the articles that organize issuing the inheritance certificate and its authenticity. The fourth topic discusses the jurisdiction of the chief judge of the family court as a judge in urgent matters to file petitions, as a judge of Provisional Matters in the Court of main instance. For the sixth and seventh topics, the book focuses on the role of family affairs' procurator office; offices of settling family disputes; the legal form in these offices.   Clouds in Egypt's Sky

ECWR conducted a study, "Clouds in Egypt's Sky,” targeted 2000 Egyptian men and women from Cairo (Masaken Ain Shams, Shobra Masr, Kaloibya (Shobra el Kheima, Banha)), and Giza (Embaba, El Dokki), and 100 foreign women from Cairo (students at AUC, tourists in the Khan el Khalili, and students at Arabic language centers).  The study was published on the 17th of July, 2008.

The new research tackled sexual harassment on three levels: Sexual harassment: "The Female Perspective"This section aims to understand sexual harassment as experienced by women, to discover how they perceive the issue, how often they face it, and the demographics that are most effected. It also explores how women see the role of the security and police force in protecting them, both on the streets and also in private settings between friends and family members.Men and sexual harassment: "The Male Perspective"This aspect of the research tackles sexual harassment as perceived by men who have been accused of harassing women. This new approach reveals how men define sexual harassment and compares their definition with that of women.  This section determines the main demographic of accused harassers and the men in the study were asked to explain their reasons for harassing women. In addition, the harassers were asked to give suggestions for how the issue of sexual harassment can be resolved.  Foreign Women: "Views and experiences"After receiving many complaints from foreign women (tourists, and also students and residents) it became clear that not only is harassing foreign women prevalent in Egypt but also that it could potentially dissuade foreigners from returning or from encouraging others to visit Egypt. The British Embassy, as well as several other embassies, routinely warns its citizens that sexual harassment is common in Egypt before they visit. We felt we needed to disperse this information and engage the Ministry of Tourism in a discussion on the effects of sexual harassment on tourism in Egypt.  The effects of sexual harassment on the economy and tourism are mentioned in the study and were also discussed in a seminar attended by economic and sociology professors and representatives from the Ministry of Tourism. We published the research on the 17th of July, 2008 at a press conference at the ECWR office that was attended by many journalists and news channels. read more >>>
