The most important pillars of human rights are the freedom of the individual and his/her ability of expression and access to, receive and transfer of information and ideas without fear of authority’s interference. Added to that, the freedom to work, believe, and practice freely and safely religious traditions without fear of the basic rights of human being.
Those rights are important for personal development and the dignity of each individual, and they are important to the realization of other human rights which all constitute the basic building block for all new and advanced democracies.
Since the constitution is the first pillar to protect those freedoms for all groups in society and in particular for the Egyptian women; who obtained unprecedented rights in the Pharaonic civilization, where they came to the authority/ power and ran the country.
We recommend that the Constitution should stipulate and guarantee all rights for women and address the historical, cultural and social distortion that brought women to this low standard.
In the current time, we find a severe decline in the society’s belief in women’s capacities and skills and there are attempts to steal some of the tiny gains that women struggled for getting for long eras.
Therefore, ECWR expresses its deep concern over the conditions that Egypt passes whether at the public or private sectors and particularly women’s rights which could be ignored by the legislators and not be maintained in the constitution that is being developed.
ECWR sees the need to create a forum that collects news, reports, discussions related to women and constitution and to gather them in Arabic and English in one place. This forum aims at providing information for those who are interested in women’s situation. The forum will include information about women’s status in the constitution and the discussions that are going on as well as the fights for these rights.
