Egyptian Center for women’s rights concludes its activities for the 16-days of activism against GBV
ECWR concluded its activities for 16-days of activism against gender-based violence. Over the 16 days ECWR has initiated 10 raising-awareness events in different governorates organized by coordinators of ECWR’s Women’s Voices Project. The events were held in Cairo, Minya, Gharbia, Matruh, Giza, Fayoum, Newy Valley, Bani Suef, and Kafr El-Sheikh.
These raising-awareness events addressed the idea and purpose of the 16 days campaign. They also tackled the issue of violence against women (VAW), types of VAW ranging from domestic, social, political and sexual violence. Reasons and implications of VAW and ways to get out of this violent cycle were also discussed in these events.
In spite of the efforts exerted both on the international and national levels, the phenomenon of VAW still prevails. For this reason both civil society organizations and state institutions should further coordinate their efforts to shed light on this phenomenon addressing its root causes.
Hence, ECWR calls for:

  • Coordination between the various government agencies and civil society organizations to combat this phenomenon
  • Raising awareness on VAW unites in the Ministry of Interior, the services they offer, and how to access these services
