{"id":7259,"date":"2016-07-14T12:42:59","date_gmt":"2016-07-14T09:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecwronline.org\/?p=7259"},"modified":"2024-09-16T09:47:02","modified_gmt":"2024-09-16T09:47:02","slug":"ecwr-condemns-mps-statement-on-fgm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecwronline.org\/?p=7259&lang=ar","title":{"rendered":"ECWR Condemns MP&#8217;s statement on FGM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"direction: ltr; text-align: justify;\">(<em>Cairo 14<sup>th<\/sup> July, 2016)\u00a0<\/em>ECWR condemns the statement of a Member of health committee of Egypt\u2019s House of Representatives, Ahmed el-Tahawy, on female genital mutilation (FGM), as he said, as a doctor, he believes that\u201cLeaving the female without excision is wrong, beside there is no harm to the female from the circumcision operation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The MP\u2019s statement is an incitement to commit a crime and violence against women. Instead of MPs performing their legislative and monitoring duties, some MPs are inciting a crime. This statement also violates the law as the practice of FGM is criminalized in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Egyptian Penal Code stipulates that<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>Whoever causes wound mentioned in Articles no 241 &amp; 242 of penal code occurs by female genital mutilation shall be punished with imprisonment for not less than a period of three months and not exceed two years or a fine of not less than 5000 pounds<\/em> &#8220;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>It also violates the Health Minister decree 271 of 2007 which states in its first article,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>Doctors, health providers and others are <\/em><em>banned from performing FGM<\/em><em> whether in governmental or non-governmental hospitals or other places.
