The Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights (ECWR) won the Euro-Mediterranean
Women’s Foundation prize for advocacy and policy dialogue in the promotion
for women’s rights
In recognition of its efforts in defending the women’s rights, the Egyptian
Center for Women’s Rights (ECWR) has been awarded as one of the most
influential NGOs in the southern Mediterranean countries in the field of
advocacy for women’s rights. ECWR’s project “Safe Street for All: Campaign
Against Sexual Harassment in Egypt” was chosen as one of the most successful
practices in the field of advocacy and political dialogue aiming at
supporting the role of women in the society.
ECWR started this project in 2005 to counter the phenomenon of sexual
harassment. The issue of sexual harassment at that time was still very
sensitive. However ECWR has been determined on drawing the public attention
on the issue. This was done through two major research studies:
First under the title: Sexual Harassment, the Social Cancer
The second under the title: Clouds in Egypt’s Sky
Both the studies were shocking for the society and decision-makers. This
resulted in many organizations and individuals joining the campaign. The
campaign extended to cover many other Arab countries both inside and outside
the southern Mediterranean area.
This recognition comes as part of CSO WINS Project, run by the
Neighbourhood Civil Society Facility of the European Neighbourhood and
Partnership Instrument of the European Union (Euro-Mediterranean Women’s
Foundation), to support the exchange of the experiences and lessons learned
among civil society organizations in the southern Mediterranean countries.
This will in turn help NGOs build networks and alliances to entrench the
principle of gender equality in various fields through organizing activities
and events gathering many other civil society organizations that are both
based in the southern Mediterranean and working in the field of gender
equality.
ECWR representatives will attend the workshop that will be held in Morocco
next April as a celebration for the award and to present ECWR’s project
“Safe Street for All: Campaign Against Sexual Harassment in Egypt”. This
workshop will help ECWR share and exchange its experience with other
organizations.
