Women- November 2006
The newsletter focused on forms of violence against women; its articles discussed Fatwa (Advisory opinion) that have been discussed by ECWR that permits divorce of women in the case of her husband’s ignorance to take her permission to travel; and a study that demonstrates that Egyptian women is exposed to harassment from all sides. The newsletter also focused on the Arab women in the part of “Women & Resistance”, and how Lebanese women resisted the Israeli war on Lebanon. The newsletter had articles in “Women & art” that were as follows: “young women filmmakers… stunts in cinema, fighters in life!”, “East women are maids in the view of west artists”. As for the case that raged debate was FGM as an aspect of violence against women, it is tackled in the article “31 million African women attacked under the FGM”. As for the activities of ECWR, the newsletter presented recommendations of the International conference ” FGM, early marriage from religious and legal perspective”, this conference was held by ECWR, and attended by 130 from public figures of lawyers, politicians, Muslim and Christians clerics, representatives of civil communities, and media professionals in addition to 21 African and International figures from different African countries. The newsletter presented the efforts of ECWR in women Democratic transition Program, as it prepares women to the political participation by “training them to the Democratic transition”.
Women- January 2007
The newsletter of January 2007 shed light on the role of the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights in harassment issue under the title “ECWR the first who talk about harassment problem and who predicted its danger”. It also referred to ECWR’s discussion of women’s claims in the constitutional amendment of 2007, and of either women achieved to access to the political life or they still on gates of Parliament? The newsletter dealt in the part of “when women talk” with the lawsuits that are filed by women who suffer from family problems. The newsletter was not away from Arab women’s status; it presented status of Algerian women, in addition to the personal status law in Bahrain. In the part of “Women & Art” the articles were as follows: “Woman in Egyptian cinema is an evil temptation … or tolerance angel!!” there was another article that arise another question “what’s more effective; movies and series drama… or life drama?” The newsletter allocated a part to talk about the achievements of ECWR in 2006. This newsletter concluded with an article entitled “message to Egyptian father: did I say to you THANKS?”
Women- March 2007
This newsletter referred to ECWR’s discussion of the social aspects of Egyptian women’s marriage to foreigners. The file of the newsletter under the title of women & work was “the Egyptian woman is between the vortexes of work and home”. There was an article by D. Shaheda Al Baaz entitled “labour law in Egypt punishes the working woman”. Under “when women talk” part, the newsletter presents some legal situations from which the Egyptian women suffer. In the part of Arab women, it talked about women’s status in Saudi Arabia in an article entitled ” Saudi woman is an absentee organism, when will she be present?” And it referred also to the social discrimination that the Palestinian women suffer from, and the problems they face like unemployment, family violence, and honor crimes. The newsletter presented some (Fiqhi) doctrinal issues under the title “Syrian mufti: the solution is to kill adultery and not the adulterer!” another case “appointment of women judges raged debate between (Fiqh) Jurisdiction and law… the prestige of a pregnant judge”. In the division of art, the newsletter dealt with the problems that have been discussed in “Donya” movie. As for women’s news, there was a discussion about the probabilities of better political participation for women in next elections than that of the Parliamentarian elections of 2005, and there was a presentation for the seminar that discussed Arab Human Development Report about women development in the Arab world. The newsletter dealt with other matters related to women, it presented excerpts from things that concern women under the title “tales of women with amendments… meat more important than constitutions”. Finally the newsletter tackled women’s use of the internet nowadays in an article entitled “are chat rooms trick family restrictions?” , it tackled marriage customs in Egypt as well.
Women- January 2008
The newsletter has some articles, the first was the newsletter’s file and it discussed how women became obsessed nowadays to be like the ideal beauty measurements by plastic surgeries. There was an interview with the artist Hind Adnan about her achievements in plastic art. The newsletter talked also about the problems that face young women and women daily under the title “country of girls… discover of facts of harassment and briberies”. As for Arab women’s status, it presented the experience of Jordanian women to access to parliament. As for the relationship between children and fathers, there was a study entitled “who brings up whom… children or fathers?” Under the title “Girls”, the newsletter presented problems of girls under 20 years old “going outside is a restriction for the young woman, freedom for the young man”. There was also an investigation entitled “3 thousands young women run away from home every year in Egypt”, it demonstrated problems that led to the phenomenon lately. The newsletter presented some economic solutions for household budget as well.
Women- February 2009
One of most prominent articles of this newsletter was “criminalizing preventing women to take her inheritance and delaying executing the pregnant guilty”. In the division of women & decision making, the newsletter dealt with the presidential decree to appoint 103 women to be “Assistant Administrative Prosecutor”, it dealt also with the achievements of law in 2008 ,as there was an article entitled “determine minimum age of marriage, criminalizing children trafficking are the most important legal achievements to childhood”. There was a discussion of an international conference that describes Egypt to be the passage country into humans trafficking. The most important Fatwa related to women in 2008 that has been discussed was “permission to hit the husband, abort rape victim, women work as marriage registrar. There were statistics like “Egypt at the top of list in husband’s beating of their wife, in addition to the harassment in Egypt that became a threat to tourism, ” 83% from Egyptian women have been exposed to harassment”, the newsletter presented Noha Rushdy’s case “the first lawsuit against sexual harassment.
Women- special edition
In this special edition that ECWR has issued about women’s political participation, there were articles as follows: “women committees in parties… reformation or cancellation”,” for the first time: political participation in camp vanguard”. The edition referred to Mrs. Nihad Abu el Qoumsan participation in seminar about social integration and marginalization in Egypt, it referred also to ECWR’s organizing roundtable to discuss women’s right to travel. The edition had an article entitled “Road to Durban before Geneva”. This edition shed light on some conferences like the third annual conference of the National Center for Social and Criminological Research that warned from spread of feminization of poverty phenomenon; woman was the first theme of this conference. One of the activities of ECWR that this edition tackled is training the governmental institutions and working in Africa through the program of four knowledge.
Women- special edition
ECWR issued this edition as a celebration of appointment of the first women judge in Egypt, it included the congratulation of advisor Tahani Al Gebally to ECWR after this appointment. In the file of the edition, there was a historical vision on laws of civil communities, as these laws in Egypt are considered dedication to the ministry authority on civil work. The edition also had a critical study on NGOs law no. 84/2002, and an interview on the new law of NGOs. One of activities tackled in this edition is the workshop that held by the ECWR under the title “women political participation in Egypt is the beginning of the road or its end”, in addition to the cultural day for children that the ECWR held in cooperation with ministry of Education and entitled “Guys and girls… culture and entertainment”
Women- a documentary edition about the international conventions concerning women’s rights
This edition has the most significant international conventions and agreements like Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the declaration of Elimination against discrimination against women, Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Immigration and nationality convention, convention on the political rights of women, Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age for Marriage and Registration of Marriages, in addition to the Declaration on the Protection of Women and Children in Emergency and Armed Conflict.
