Women’s appointment in the judiciary and reforming the justice system are important decisions by the president that support women’s participation in the judiciary.
During the meeting of the Supreme Council of Judicial Bodies chaired by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi yesterday, June 2, 2021, a number of decisions were issued that contribute to reforming the justice system, increasing transparency, justice, equality in appointments and grievances, and equal pay among all judicial bodies. This emphasizes justice and equality and paves the way for participation of all the different groups from entering the judicial field, especially young legal women who have suffered from gender-based discrimination for decades.
These decisions are considered an important step that contributes directly to implementing the constitution and the law, and reducing discrimination in appointing women to judicial bodies.
The decisions also confirmed the start of women’s work in the State Council and the Public Prosecution as of October 1, 2021.
This decision is a confirmation of Article 11 of the 2014 Constitution, which states: “The state commits to achieving equality between women and men in all civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution. The state commits to taking the necessary measures to ensure appropriate representation of women in the houses of parliament, in the manner specified by law. It grants women the right to hold public posts and high management posts in the state, and to appointment in judicial bodies and entities without discrimination….”
Nehad Abulkomsan, ECWR’s chairwoman, confirms that this decision is the beginning of ending the suffering of women working in some judicial bodies and discrimination against them and ignoring the use of the expertise and skills of many women in this field, and it must be built upon.
