(Cairo, May 18, 2023)

ECWR participated in the fourth regional consultative seminar, which was titled “Violence against Women and Girls… Its Causes and Consequences”, in cooperation between the Geneva Institute for Human Rights in Switzerland and the Kuwaiti Federation of Women’s Associations in Kuwait from 16 to May 18, 2023.

The regional consultative workshop brings together a number of representatives of non-governmental organizations working in the field of elimination violence against women and girls from various Arab countries with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the issue of violence against women and girls, and representatives of a number of United Nations agencies.  It is a good opportunity for participants to exchange their experiences in different country contexts and areas of work and knowledge of the main challenges and women face violence in the Middle East and North Africa.

The consultative workshop highlights the importance of working with special rapporteurs as a means of addressing various issues of Human rights, the most important of which is also the consolidation and coordination of efforts to ensure that our girls and women enjoy a world free of violence. As well as sharing approaches and strategies for the promotion of women’s rights in the region.

It is worth mentioning the participation of ECWR, represented by Ms. Nehad Abuelkomsan, ECWR’s chairwoman, in this consultative session, with two dialogue sessions. The first was entitled “The Impact of Culture and Traditions on Violence against Women and Girls and How to Address the Root Causes”, while the second session discussed “Culturally Sensitive Remedies and Reparations” for women subjected to violence in the Middle East.
