(Cairo, November 21st, 2018) In the framework of promoting the joint cooperation between the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights (ECWR) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS); a national campaign will be launched for developing awareness of local municipalities in a number of Egypt’s governorates.
The National Campaign aims at shedding light and raising citizens’ awareness of their role in the upcoming local councils which is very important for improving their communities especially villages. The campaign includes raising awareness of the importance of local councils, the local system in the 2014 Constitution, its formation and responsibilities. The campaign also shows the conditions for nomination, and how to be ready for running for local councils elections. This campaign targets different age groups of young people; women and men.
The campaign will start the first of its activities with a conference in Bani-Swif governorate on Thursday 22nd of November 2018.
ECWR carries out these activities in the frame of “Women’s Empowerment in Local Councils” Project that aims to:
- Enhance capacities of women activists from 6 governorates to participate in the upcoming local councils whether as candidate or a member.
- Adopt a gender-sensitive participatory approach by Local authorities to decision-making at the local level.
Therefore, Ms. Nehad Abul Komsan, Chairwoman of ECWR, emphasizes that this cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sport is not the first one but there was a big series of joint cooperation in the frame of raising awareness of all categories of society to highlight the importance of their role and participation in public life.
