Video… Nehad’s Stories Explains the Concept of Masculinity and How to Build Relationships Based on Partnership

(Cairo June 14th, 2021) In a new episode of Nehad’s Stories TV show program presented by Nehad Abulkomsan, senior lawyer and ECWR’s chairwoman, she addressed the concept of masculinity and some of the misconceptions circulated by some people that harm men and women as well. She clarified the correct concept of masculinity, in an episode entitled “How to be a good man.”

Abulkomsan emphasized that the correct concept of masculinity is based on participation and building balanced relationships based on support, partnership and mutual cooperation between men and women, which results in a strong human connection between all family members, open channels for dialogue and discussion on an ongoing basis, and provides equal opportunities for women to succeed.

Abulkomsan pointed out that some men and young people have adopted a false concept of masculinity based on authority, control and control over women and a loud voice, which of course negatively affects all family members. Nehad told a story of a father who has sons and daughters and who raises them correctly without separating them, and taught the children the need to help the mother and sisters with the household chores, which created a coherent family atmosphere based on storytelling, dialogue, mutual trust and constant discussion.

Abulkomsan emphasized that men’s support for women and providing a helping hand to them benefits both of them, through the availability of a stable supportive environment and creating a sense of security and confidence, and every successful woman and young woman is a result of her efforts and the presence of a great man supporting her, whether he is a father, a brother or a husband, and the self-actualized woman has a sense of satisfaction, and the ability to debate and dialogue, and an analytical view of things.

The episode used a video presentation of the “I am a man” campaign for the National Council for Women in cooperation with the UN Women, which deals with correcting misconceptions of masculinity and replacing it with correct concepts of masculinity among young people.

The episode also presented the various activities of the campaign to change awareness and behavior “because I am a man” such as a five-a-side football league, as a kind of attracting young people to play and also holding open discussions for young people to correct their notions of masculinity.

In the inspiring personalities segment, the episode hosted  “Habiba Hussein and Mustafa Al-Halfawi” members of the “The Right Man” campaign at the Faculty of Mass Communication, where their graduation project was a campaign to correct the concept of masculinity at the university, through which some young people’s justification for crimes such as sexual harassment was monitored.

Therefore, the campaign seeks to discuss correcting the concept of masculinity, and its impact on both young men and women, and to teach young people to pay attention to details and take care of themselves and those around them, and build relationships based on respect for difference, which helps young people to live in a better way on the social level and establish healthy relationships. Despite that this campaign was subjected to many bullies, they continue to work with a hope for a change.

The episode ended with communicating through questions that the audience sends to the program and answering them.
