(Cairo, May 25th, 2022) The Egyptian actor ‘Amr Waked, who is a fugitive outside Egypt claiming political opposition, wrote discriminatory words on his Twitter account against Egyptian women constitute a crime, as he described all women who support the regime as “a female for a hundred men“
Amr Waked wrote on his twitter account a post under a title “the second referendum” where he states that: “It’s said that a Sisi-supporter woman is a female for a hundred men, but a non-Sisi-supporter woman is a lady worth a hundred men. Which one is you?”
This shocked Egyptian women and they confronted him with a massive campaign of denunciation and rejection. They considered this tweet as a discriminatory insult and moral violence, in accordance with international human rights instruments, The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention) , and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
ECWR believes that what Amr Waked wrote is a crime in accordance with international and national law, because it has meanings with explicit accusations that those who disagree with him are ‘prostitutes’ and he described them as “a woman who has a relationship with a hundred men”
It also is considered a discriminatory crime, contempt and an insult to dignity, as the term “female” was used to describe his opponents in ideas, while he used the term “lady” to describe those who supported his ideas.
Although ‘Amr Waked’ deleted the tweet and apologized for it, his apology confirms his racist crime, as he described any behavior that supports the regime as despicable.
Nehad Abulkomsan, ECWR’s chairwoman, confirms that what Amr Waked did necessitates a trial for the crime of discrimination, as he stigmatized a wide group of women with the worst descriptions, simply because they differed with him in opinion, which contradicts the most basic principles of human rights and women’s rights.
He also performs a projection on the woman’s body and behavior and uses that in the political dispute with the Egyptian regime. This behavior does not differ from the political use of women’s bodies in any armed political conflict.
This is criminalized by Security Council Resolution 1325 – and the recommendations of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to confront violence against women.
The Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights calls the Secretary-General of the United Nations, international human rights organizations, women’s organizations and the ‘Me Too’ Movement for showing solidarity with Egyptian women in combating this racist discourse, using women and sexually abuse in political disputes.
ECWR demands boycotting and stopping the work of the Actor “Amr Waked”, and we, ‘ECWR’, will take all legal procedures against the Egyptian actor.
