(Cairo, March 15, 2021) The start of the sixty-fifth session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, which begins on the 15th of March and ends on the 26th of the same month.
The Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights, represented by Ms. Nehad Abolkomsan, is participating as a speaker and moderator in seven activities. On top of those events is Ms. Abolkomsan’s participation in one of official sessions entitled “An Interactive Dialogue on Eliminating Violence against Women in Public Life.”
As for side events, ECWR will be participating in an event entitled ” Defending and Empowering Women in the Home and in the Public Arena: Addressing Violence Against Women “, in which Ms. Nehad will present the ECWR’s efforts in combating violence against women in Egypt. The event is organized by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) and hosts a number of countries, including Lebanon, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan and Egypt.
And about the ECWR’s participation in the ” Gender Justice & The Law Implications of inequality before the law ” event organized by the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Population Fund, the UN Women and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in cooperation with the Jordanian National Commission for Women, as well as the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Development, Equality and Family in Morocco. This side event seeks to incorporate gender equity and the law as tools to strengthen countries’ commitment to international frameworks.
ECWR also participates with Karama in three activities, the first under the title “Legal Reform and Gender-Based Violence,” the second event entitled “The Constitution and Elections,” and the third event entitled “Women & Youth in Peace and Security.”
Hosting an elite group of speakers; Abolkomsan is moderating a side event entitled ” Women at the Frontline: Inspiring Leadership ” organized by the British Council and includes Ms. Amina Tarraf, Minister Assistant, Ministry of Social Solidarity, Mrs. Heba Rashad, CEO, Mersal Foundation, and Ms. Atifa Temjeruddin – Vice President of the Democratic Association for Women in Morocco.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, all the events of the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women will be held remotely, which is a great opportunity for all interested in participating in such activities.
